What are Hispanics considered (racially) in the US?

Yeah most Americans have a stereotype that Hispanics are olive skinned to dark tan. They must have dark hair and dark eyes. Imagine Spanish looking people. I'll be honest, I thought this for a long time. Before I got educated and realized Latino is not a race, I thought it was weird when black people or blond people called themselves Latino or that they were making it up.
